Set Alight bags yet another classic

Set Alight

Dr Vijay Mallya owned Set Alight continued her amazing run of wins by claiming the Gr 1 Gitanjali Indian 1000 Guineas on Sunday (March 1) as expected. Set Alight who had earlier won the Gr 1 Kingfisher Bangalore Derby and the Gr 1 Fillies Trial Stakes in July last year at Bangalore, was the firm favourite to win the coveted event.

The wonder filly duly accomplished the task assigned to her by staving off the challenge of multiple classic winner Icebreaker.

Set Alight is now targeted for the coveted Gr 1 McDowell Indian Derby which is scheduled for Sunday, April 12. Set Alight thus swelled her unbeaten winning sequence to nine.

Dr Mallya who made one of those rare appearances at the race course, led in Set Alight with great delight. ``I have been pretty successful with fillies which have given me three of my five Indian Derby triumphs. I hope Set Alight will provide me the sixth Indian Derby Success,’’ Dr Mallya said. ``I am doubly thrilled because I also owned and raced Set Alight’s dam, Set Aside,’’ he added.

The record timing she may not have been able to cut but Set Alight (Razeen - Set Aside) won as easily as expected by her connections. Aurora Aurealis shot into the lead as the field of nine took off from the gates and was followed by the no-hopers with Icebreaker and Set Alight keeping pace with each other in the mid bunch. The pace of the race was indeed slow. Icebreaker moved steadily as the race progressed to range alongside Aurora Aurealis in the straight. David Allan astride Icebreaker tried to pull a fast one on Chris Hayes by forging ahead but Set Alight was in no mood to do anything different than what she had done in her career so far. She pounced on Icebreaker in a jiffy and the race was over bar the shouting at that stage. Originality came up with a late rally to figure in the money.

Both the breeding and racing operations of URBB Ltd has been progressing smoothly and the victory of Chevron (Brave Act) in the last race helped to swell the tally of Kunigal Stud Farm bred horses who have been going great guns. Just a day ago, the daughter of Burden of Proof, Abs Fabs had won her second Derby by winning the richly endowed Gr 1 Eveready Calcutta Derby Stakes. The Arjun Mangalorkar trained Abs Fabs had earlier won the Gr 1 Poonawalla Mysore Derby last year.
