Full Speed at Dubai
- Sharan Kumar

With the establishment of the protocol between UAE Racing Authorities and Indian counterparts, Indian horses this year have had the privilege of flying directly to Dubai to take part in the Dubai International Racing Carnival. Gr 1 Poonawalla Mysore Derby winner Full Speed flew on January 19 and took part in a race four days later to create a history of sorts.

Two years ago, two Indian horses, Classical Act and Zurbaran had raced during the Dubai Racing Carnival. Classical Act was owned by Dr Vijay Mallya while Zurbaran was the property of Mr. K N Dhunjibhoy and his partners.

Both of them were trained by Padmanabhan. The two horses took a circuitous route to Dubai by first traveling to USA and then spending 40 days in quarantine before flying to race in the carnival. Classical Act very nearly pulled off a sensational win but narrowly missed the honour and finished a creditable third against quality international opposition.

Full Speed, bred at the Kunigal Stud Farm, is the second Derby winning son of Burden of Proof. Apart from winning the Derby, Full Speed had also won the Gr 2 Bangalore 2000 Guineas, beating the likes of Berlioz who incidentally is also racing at the Carnival. Originally trained by Irfan Ghatala, Full Speed is now under the care of Pesi Shroff and jockey Suraj Narredu partnered the horse in his first run at Dubai.
