The November Goff’s Mares Sales had a big Indian representation, with as many as 130 mares in foal to fashionably bred stallions being bought enthusiastically by Indian breeders. Kunigal Stud Farm which has a host of Derby winning mares among the list of its broodmares has been steadily building up the stock by buying regularly at the Goff’s Mares Sales.

The Goff’s Mares Sales has been a favourite of Indian breeders; with a number of horses bought there in recent times producing classic winners in India. In keeping with the policy of broad-basing its stock, the Kunigal Stud Farm bought four more mares in last year’s sales and the mares have since arrived at the stud farm. Zeyn Mriza and Dr John Weld, who was primarily responsible for setting up the URBB’s breeding operations after the Kunigal Stud Farm came under its wing, selected the purchases. The mares have been bought keeping in mind the fact that the son of Danehil, Admiralofthefleet is likely to join the stud farm as a stallion at the end of his racing career.

The four-year old is currently racing in Dubai. The focus has also been to ensure that speed rules the pedigree influences in keeping with the needs of Indian racing which is mostly oriented towards sprinter milers.

The following were the mares bought at Goff’s:

Alnasreya is a young winning daughter of Machiavellian – out of a Green Desert. The mare is beautifully confirmed and is a half-sister to Gr 1 winner.

Machiavellian is a leading broodmare sire and is also a full brother to the dam of Admiralofthefleet which is a stallion prospect of Kunigal Stud Farm. The son of Danehill who is owned by Dr Vijay Mallya is a four-year old and he is currently racing at Dubai. According to Dhun Kothavala, a noted pedigree expert, Alnasreya is the best mare purchased among the host of purchases by Indian breeders.

The second mare, Samra Middle East, is the young winning daughter of Marju out of a Machiavellian mare. Winner at two and placed, she was rated 100 and performed at Gr.1 level in France though unplaced [6th]. She comes from a good tail line. Her third dam is Ribbon, the dam of Risen Star.

Hindalguia is a Gr 3 winner and Gr 1 placed. She had a Time Form rating of 114 and earned almost $100,000 in stakes. Hindalguia is an attractive mare by Barathea and she is in bred to Somethingroyal through two brothers Secretariat and Sir Gaylord. The dam of Hindalguia is a Gr 2 winner and 2nd dam, Gr.1 winner.

The fourth mare purchased was My Hansel. She is a winner at 2 & 3, Gr.1 Placed from only 6 starts. She is an attractive and well conformed mare by Hansel [Mr. Prospector line] out of a Rousillon mare [top broodmare sire]. She is a half-sister to multiple Gr. winner.
